Joanna's work seeks to capture some of the delicate tensions and fragility within everyday life. Visual images of frailty and strength, decay and regeneration act as metaphors for the global issues of poverty and wealth, struggle and freedom, life and death . She is particularly drawn to moments and places where these seemingly diametrically opposed aspects converge and, on occasion, give rise to the unexpected. The work is interwoven with elements of intimacy, texture, sculptural form, the suspense of time and the play of light.
